Navigating Perimenopause: A Guide to Wellness and Self-Advocacy

Dr. Maya Angelou Quote

I chose to be on my own side. Navigating the twists and turns of perimenopause has been quite the journey. I've heard everything from "you're too young to even think of menopause" to "perhaps some of your symptoms are because you haven't had a baby (there's still time)." I often struggled in silence and with limited information. However, when I left my corporate job and became a squash coach, predominantly playing with women aged 35 plus, it became more apparent that most of us were on the same boat, with scattered pieces of information and tips that we may have stumbled upon. My first choice (squash coaching will always be my first love!) was to educate myself formally to give my symptoms a voice unique to me.

The Significance of Self-Advocacy

Even with a group experiencing similar symptoms, I had to start honing in on the ones specific to me. Sleepless nights, migraines, night sweats, hot flashes, anxiety, and strains of depression were regularly wandering in and out of my life. I felt like I was in survival mode. Once I grasped that self-advocacy was the key to turning this around, I had a lightbulb moment. Taking charge of my well-being and investing in myself was a game-changer.

Empowering Through Knowledge

Education and research have become second nature to me. The confidence to make informed changes and realize that a solution I use may not fit someone else but having alternatives is vital. One simple step I still use is tracking my symptoms—my sneaky hot flashes appear two days before my cycle and stay for a day or two through it. Part of my insomnia was a result of the fear of waking up drenched in sweat!

In addition to tracking my symptoms, I've found small daily tools to be incredibly helpful. One such tool are my steel tumblers. I started jotting empowering quotes in my journal to keep me going! Staying hydrated is essential, and having a tumbler that keeps my water cool and serves as a reminder to drink regularly has been a blessing.

Building a Supportive Community

I'm lucky to be surrounded by a tribe of resilient women on and off court and it has been an absolute game-changer. In my 4-week wellness program, I'm hoping to foster a space of compassion, understanding, and growth to return the favour! It's not just about finding answers; it's about connecting and lifting each other up.

My final thoughts

Reflecting on my experiences and the wisdom of Maya Angelou, I'm reminded of the beauty in embracing our journey—flaws and all. Let's stand tall, advocate for our health, and inspire others to do the same. Because when women support each other, incredible things happen.
